about

This brief collection of songs emerged as part of a term project for a course I was taking as part of a masters program at Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto. The aim of my project was to create two songs that were inspired by the Angulimala Sutta, which is a Buddhist text that tells the story of a murderous bandit who encounters the Buddha. Through a profound experience of compassion and transformation, Angulimala commits to a life of non-violence.

I have been inspired by the resonance between the transformation of Angulimala and the transformation that I have observed in some of the clients that I work with in a Partner Assault Response (PAR) program. All of the clients that I work with are court mandated to attend the PAR program because they have been charged with crimes of domestic violence. Observing the growth of some of these clients has been revelatory for me as a program facilitator, and I have found song-writing to be a useful outlet for expressing the nature of witnessing these transformative experiences. Discovering a similar process of transformation in the story of Angulimala has provided me with an archetype of one who learns to walk a path of redemption. The song-writing discussed below is intended to capture this archetypal journey of living a violent life, encountering dramatic change, discovering one’s own vulnerability in a safe way, committing to a life of non-violence, and bearing the fruit of their karma as they continue to grow. The song-writing invites listeners, particularly those who have caused harm and those who hold space for them, to discover an understanding of what this process of transformation might feel like.

All proceeds from the downloads of these songs will be donated to the PAR program at Counterpoint Counselling and Educational Cooperative. As a non-profit organization Counterpoint benefits from even the smallest of financial contributions. I could not have written these songs without being inspired by my interactions with this client population and therefore it seems only right that I offer up any financial gains made from this project to this organization.
